What was the community impact of your volunteering project? Children fundraised $327.50 for Cystic Fibrosis, they raised awareness and brought the whole school together for a fun activity. My class really enjoyed participating in SVA kit, it brought about lots of discussions of people/groups in our community and further afield. Tamariki at our school are always supported to lead fundraisers or promote a cause that they feel passionate about so the SVA kit fitted in well. It also encompassed our school values and the children loved identifying areas of strength they had not previously identified. By the process of elimination children decided we would fundraise for Cystic Fibrosis by having a sausage sizzle lunch day and run a Ninja warrior course for the whole school. Cystic Fibrosis is a cause that two children are very passionate about in our class and it was fantastic to see their peers support this as well. Initially we were asking for a gold coin donation but children decided it was about raising awareness and having fun. The event was a huge success, all children participated and the feedback we received from other classes and teachers is to make it an annual event.

We believe the recipients will be very happy. If possible we would have been in closer contact with the organiser to assist

What type of project did your class undertake? Project for Those in Need
Due to being in two lockdown's this year we were unable to fulfil the actual project requirements, however we did spend time creating the idea for our volunteer army and managed to carry out some of the tasks we designed. We discussed people in need and then once lockdown hit and we were exposed to the loss of income for some areas of our community we decided we would devise a way in which to support those families and in particular children of. This lined up with a local teacher creating Christmas packs for underprivileged children who would now face an uncertain Christmas. The students in my class were extremely concerned for these children and spoke to their families about how best we could support them. Our future focus would be to carry out this initiative to the end result and deliver created packs ourselves to the distribution organiser.

What type of project did your class undertake? Water Based Project
It linked with our Inquiry into the local environment, in particular Estuaries. We were learning about how important estuaries have been in the past and now, providing food and shelter and how they are damaged by rubbish and pollution

We haven't quite finished yet as my students to buy Christmas Presents for a local Christmas Present Drive but the kit has been fantastic so far. It has really worked in with one of our school values of manaakitanga. Students have been so excited being able to take full control on what they want to do to make a difference to someone else. They were able to come up with completely unrealistic ideas and then consider if it would be possible to make it work or not. I've loved seeing the empathy, teamwork and problem solving my students have shown using this kit.

Glendowie Primary School Kit Review The kit was very well organised and designed. The children in my class loved wearing the badges and they took the roles seriously. Conveniently, the school kit connected very well with our current learning topic about investigating how people give service in our community. We took ideas from your plan and combined it with our required learning programme. We designed our own charitable organization and provided service within our school. We discussed the planning side of running a charity and used this as an inquiry-based learning opportunity. We really enjoyed using your resources, thank you so much. Keep up the amazing work!

Kia ora koutou I apologise for the late reply! We usually feedback with the syndicate (Toroa) as we plan together. We have thoroughly enjoyed the Student Volunteer Army unit. Our syndicate has planned activities to give back to the community. In fact, we, Toroa Syndicate will be picking up rubbish at Graslee Park tomorrow, Thursday 2 December. We will be having our second zoom with Sam (SVA). We also had a bake sale and raised over $900 dollars. We haven't decided where the donation will go to. The students have come up with a few organisations that they think can put the money to good use. We thank you again for the resources. Getting the students to understand the role each person plays is very important. Having a zoom conversation with Sam was also very useful. The students asked Sam some great questions regarding his volunteer work. The students realise that to execute a good plan requires commitment from everyone involved. The students are also realising the behind the scenes work, that is, the planning and making sure that everyone involved is on point. If not, that backups are put in place. For example, the 'what if' scenarios. Again thank you for the resources. We do count ourselves fortunate to be included in these kits. Ngā mihi
