The kit was very helpful with my Year 7-8 class. We ran it alongside our ongoing class inquiry around conseravation, horticulture and food technology. The students enjoyed being able to work together to problem solve and find a need within our community that we could come together to help with. The students researched green spaces and enviroschools to see how we could make better use of our amazing area and environment. Being a small country school, the kids believed we should all have some type of sustainable garden at our homes! Also doing mahi around financial literacy, the students saw the benefit in growing our own vegetables to help keep costs down long term and also explored Rongoā to see how different plants could be used to support our health and wellbeing. A number of students got involved with some gardening and maintenance for some of our neighbours at our kura so that they would be able to start their own vegetable gardens and my students are also growing some peas, spinach and lettuce as part of the science aspect of their inquiries, following the growth and development of the vegetables. Some of the vegetables grown will be used in a Food Technology Challenge at the start of Term 2, and a small group from the class are taking the project a step further and looking at creating a school community garden where we can share some supplies with our community and whānau. The rest of the class will be creating their own mini garden boxes, some of these will stay at school and some will be donated to whānau and members of our community who would like to start their own gardens!

Carried this experience out with Year 1 learners and it was really fun. The children are normally quite set in what they eat and this experience exposed them to new vocabulary and tastes. They were quite amazed that certain foods can actually change colour.

THis has been a wonderful kit to work with, opening the children's eyes to the power of helping others and how this has a powerful impact on how we feel about ourselves and how we see others.

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? As an Enviroschool, we are passionate about caring for animals. I loved doing this kit with my class, it was such a great opportunity to bring out and develop their passion for helping others. It was also a good way to show them that helping others is not about getting an extrinsic reward, but about the intrinsic reward of knowing you've done the right thing and being proud. The parents were really happy with our project of fundraising for the SPCA, and even though covid through in a few curveballs, we still managed to have a successful event. I really appreciated how helpful and flexible the Schoolkit team were as well!

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? The project not only helped to clean up our green spaces which was very much appreciated by our caretaker, but also inspired students to work in other outdoor spaces. Students enjoyed our SVA - community impact project, their task was to ";give"; to others in our school community by helping to clean up outdoor spaces in our kura. Our project was affected by lockdown but the overall outcome was really positive. Students really enjoyed working outside in the fresh air and the camaraderie was wonderful to see. Our rangatahi were very proud of there achievements.
