For our Year 5/6's the project was a bit too much / too difficult. We also had other commitments and learning ideas that this kit didn't really fit anywhere with in our curriculum.

The kit wasn't very suited to a Year 2 class. Covid has made it very difficult also.

The kit was a good addition to our Inquiry theme of Navigators of Aotearoa. We had brainstormed ideas on who needed our support in our local Mangere community and came up with ideas like, helping the homeless, elderly, environment clean etc. Unfortunately due to the Auckland lockdown we were not able to complete our plan. Students instead tried to find ways to help their family at home - mainly household chores.

What type of project did your class undertake? Food Bank Project
The SVA21 kit was a great way of getting my students to understand how showing a little kindness goes a long way in making a positive difference in others lives. This kit has lead me to thinking about ongoing acts of community service.

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? People in the old peoples home were closed off from the outside with little access to friends and family. This project enabled them a glimpse into the people outside their home at a time that they were most isolated.

What type of project did your class undertake? Staying in Touch from Afar
After brainstorming, Kauri class decied that as we were in lockdown we wanted to reach out to those in need of a friendly face. People in the old people's home would receive via online video, a touching message from students who wished showed empathy and understanding. As normality was in short supply, the students decided to video themselves doing the things they loved. This ranged from playing the piano, to feeding cows, to riding a dirtbike around a paddock. The recipiants loved the surprise and were really gratefull for such a touching gesture.

What type of project did your class undertake? Greenspace Project
Our inquiry for term 3 explored the effects that occur when we do not nurture the land. As part of our inquiry students were using the SVA Kit to plan and learn about the work that is involved in the day to day operations and volunteers who work at our local marae. Unfortunately due to all the disruptions this term students were unable to complete there SVA Project and kaimahi (volunteer) at the marae.
