The students were engaged with the planning process and with discovering what the SVA had done after the Christchurch earthquake. The filling out of the skills form lead to discussion about their skills and matching their skills with the roles in the SVA. Due to Term 3 Covid restrictions we targeted our community service to our school. .Learning how to plan and work together was a positive experience for all. Leadership skills were developed. Problem solving occurred as well.

We decided to use our kit to clean up the school grounds. It was good fun talking about the SVA and having the kids decide that they were a mini army. It was very motivational and engaging.

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? We discussed as a class ways that we can do things that have a positive impact on the community. Our school got involved in a tree planting exercise that the children understood was a great way of volunteering their time and giving back to the community.

We had started to do this however because of Covid lockdown only got to start it and then when we returned unfortunately did not get to finish due to having to complete other things and trying to fit everything in. The children were engaged in the activities and it sat well with our school values. They loved the wrist bands and some of the students have planned outdoor gardening activities to do next term within our community.

This kit was good, we received it for Term 3 - but were rudely interrupted by a lock down and Level 3 bubble school. The kids wanted to rejuvenate a forgotten garden at our school. The work has started and the plan is ready. We hope to grow veges for our school chooks who lay eggs for the community, as well as veges for the community who can buy them just for a donation - or help themselves if they help up with garden maintenance during the weekend and holidays. This space also has a grassy area that kids can play in and we plan to make some furniture and and outdoor chess board so everyone can enjoy.

The children were inspired by the resources to be involved in doing something for their community. We have investigated opportunities to be involved in beautification and conservation and have made contact with various local organisations.
