What type of project did your class undertake? Project for Those in Need
The SVA kit was the inspiration behind our Term 4 community service projects. My teaching partner and I split our pod of 48 students into four teams of 12 for Squad Games. In their squads, they completed a number of physical, cognitive and community challenges. The squads' final challenge was to complete two community services projects, 1) fill a shoe box for a child through the City Mission Toy Store Appeal and 2) organise and carry out their own service project. One team baked cookies for the workers at City Mission; another team baked items for people at an elderly home; one team collected items for children in hospital and the fourth team collected much needed items for women at a refuge centre. The projects were entirely student-driven which was really cool!

What type of project did your class undertake? Staying in Touch from Afar
Thank you for the opportunity to join SVA. My class was a small bubble, but we were still able to complete a project of meaning to the students. The project process has further strengthened their ability to plan, research and collaborate. Further to this, the opportunities for self reflection will help them to keep improving. The badges were a great reminder of roles/jobs and kept everyone focused on the job at hand. The students were all very proud to receive their wrist bands as a symbol of their hard work and helping others.

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? The children saw the impact of their actions at school in trapping pests and then decided to trap at their houses. With the idea of making a pest free halo around our school.

Loved the easy to work through steps through to completion. The children loved working out their project and taking on a role made them feel super important. We’re hoping for a pest free school in particular rats and hedgehogs. The project quickly spread to the children’s homes and we’ve started a pest free Halo around our school.

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? We as a whole school cleaned-up our local neighbourhood. All classes participated. Classes went out with their buddy classes which involved tuakana/teina relationships. It also inspired 2 year 6 boys to do a project of their own at our local river.

What type of project did your class undertake? Greenspace Project
Such a positive way to end the year - a common goal to help improve our community - planning it, and then getting it done. Great to do in Term 4 as you already have a great Team built up throughout the year.

The project taught the kids how to caring towards each other our school rule of looking after each other came into play. It also encouraged children to notice when someone hasn't got much and appreciate the small things in life.

This kit is great for our seniors when we give them a project to run. This keeps them organsied and makes them feel very professional on the day of the event.

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? We were able to put together 18 gifts along with Christmas cards which we donated to the Children's Ward at Rotorua Hospital. My class hopes that this will bring kids who have to be in hospital over Christmas a little piece of joy.

My class really enjoyed this kit, as did I. It was quite a push to get it all done within a short and busy term 4 but I was so glad that we did it. The kit allowed my students to really enact our school values and make a real impact out in the community! There were some great resources supplied in the kit, the badges were a particular hit with my class!
