The SVA Kit was so useful for our learners when we have been doing Choice based impact projects in our community. We used the template for our learners who struggle more than others to find meaningful project ideas - it was so great to kickstart their idea generation.

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? To develop more effective recycling at WFPS. Recycling was monitored, sorted and much of the rubbish re-purposed. Combined with Invercargill's Community Art project to create an art installation at He Waka Huia.

What type of project did your class undertake? Greenspace Project, Water Based Project
We used the kit to tie in with our Kaitiakitanga leadership programme. Some of the resources were useful and children could see the potential for self advocacy. Perhaps the dynamics were a little complex for some students who struggled to take responsibility for their actions. Also the distribution of roles was challenging to get right. There was more focus on the social dynamics rather than the actual action. I like the idea of this but feel smaller groups would work better in the future.

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? It was interesting to hear the conversations that took place between my students. We worked in partnership with the Ko Waitangi te Awa Trust to re-instate vegetation in wetlands on local farmland. I know my students realised the impact of their work when

The kit worked perfectly with our planning and participation in the William Pike Challenge (WPC). The WPC requires students to undertake Community Service. The kit provided a very scaffold for planning and also supporting students in their understanding of the needs within their community.

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? We were able to collect over 150 Jackets and 28 blankets to give back to the community. These donations went to local organisations who delivered them to local families in need. We completed this project coming into winter, so was a perfect time to donate

What type of project did your class undertake? Project for Those in Need
The SVA kit was an awesome kit to have in Term 2. Just having the hands on, practical resources got the kids so enthusiastic. We slotted this kit into our inquiry learning for the term, which was based on sustainability. We thought about the many ways we could help the planet and our local community through this project. After researching how long it takes for materials to break down in a landfill, we decided to do a jacket and blanket drive to donate recycled jackets and blankets to families in need. We were able to collect over 150 Jackets and 28 blankets to give back to our local community. The kids loved having their individual jobs, and took pride in the job they were assigned to do. This was an awesome kit, we really loved completing it.

As we had already found a project we were doing with our syndicate my class skipped that part. It was interesting watching them ‘evaluate’ themselves and what they saw in themselves when we were working out the best role for our personality.

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? Clean up of the local attraction impacts our whole community. The children are keen to expand on this and follow the river to the harbour, cleaning up rubbish along the way. Their other project is to enhance the stream area around our school with specia

What type of project did your class undertake? Water Based Project
The children had lots of fun taking on the different responsibilities/ roles. It complimented our learning on water quality of the local waterways and led seamlessly into a clean up of the local falls. Our overall theme this year for our school is community so it was great to have this kit preparing everything you needed to complete the project.

The resources in this kit were more suited towards older students but the idea it spurred of running a volunteer project and learning about SVA was still valuable for my Year 2-3 class.

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? In our local community (across the road from the school) we have helped to create an area that will be enjoyed for generations as a lovely green space. It borders between urban and farmland so acts as a nice transition.

We really enjoyed the School Kit SVA 21 Kit. It encouraged us to engage with a local group who were undertaking regular planting and get involved with planting in a local reserve. We have been going once per month to plant and learning lots along the way. Some of our students have also been involved in designing and communicating with local council about getting pathways put through the planting areas.
