What was the community impact of your volunteering project? We raised $1464.40 for the Palmerston North Housing advice centre. The students decided from the start that they wanted to fundraise to help the homeless. We had the coordinator come in and she was very greatfull for the work the students put in

I loved the idea. It fit our terms theme of community. We started off using the pack, however, the structure provided didn't work for us. We took the idea of helping the community and then continued the organisation and execution of the project in our own way. The project was a great success.

The SVA kit was used in the 7 classes of our school as an introduction to what a volunteer is. The conclusion was a whole school working bee to tidy and clean our school. The children had pointed out areas that needed cleaning and/or fixing in and around the school. A organisation team of Year 6 children worked through their breaks to develop a plan and to get resources for this. Platoon Leaders were selected by them and jobs assigned. They vertically grouped the school into the platoons. Each Platoon Leader gave their members a wrist band as they started, these were very popular and worn for the rest of the term by many children. All platoons worked very independently with teachers have the priviledge of observing how children worked together and the fun had by all. It brought the school together in a very positive way. As a result of watching the video the organisers arranged with Aokautere New World to donate an ice cream for every child at the end. These were a highlight of course. Children have started to look for other areas in our district that we could clean up. Without the kit we probably wouldn't have thought to provide this opportunity to the seniors and he school as a whole. A very easy kit to use continually.

We found some parts of the kit not so suitable for our junior class, however, this did not stop us from participating in SVA for ur local community.

The initiative of the SVA was very motivating for our children. They worked exceptionally well together to organise and run a mini gala that raised an impressive donation for the Housing Advice Centre to support the homeless. We found the roles difficult to fit into our event but they were easy to adapt. The rich learning and experiences the children received from the Kit was excellent. They presented to the BOT, were interviewed on the radio, approached businesses for raffle donations and worked hard running their stalls on the night. Thank you School Kit and the SVA kit sponsors.

Students loved having roles and responsibilities, and it fit in so well with our school theme of social action this term

Another excellent resource for teachers and children alike. This unit of work was completed by my student teacher. She had the children engaged in many activities for our local community. These included volunteer work for the parishioners of our church ( eg gardening, looking after pets, helping with cooking and cleaning). Groups of children also cleaned up the litter around our shopping centre and neighbourhood. The children felt very satisfied with their work.
