Due to Covid (and being in Auckland) Kahikatea class has only physically been in the classroom with me once a week over the past three weeks. Since our return we discovered it was our own school that needed our help as for three months there has been nobody to care for the grounds and area around our vegetable gardens and native tree growing unit. After carrying out acts of kindness in their own homes for the first week and discovering what a wonderful feeling this gave them all class members were keen and excited to get stuck in to tackle the task of the big clean up of our School Community Work.

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? The local river really benefitted from the clean up day we organized. The local iwi got involved and we all felt so good about contributing to our local area in a positive way.

We really enjoyed this schoolkit, it brought out the best in our students. They all chose a role that suited them and they excelled. Thank you School Kit for another success story for our children.

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? e hope that by encouraging bees and other helpful insects to our garden area, that our school gardens will prosper. We have also had a worm farm in the class and the fruit waste from school lunches has been feeding the worms-their worm wee will be diluted

We chose to 'beautify' part of a school garden that is a bit of a 'wilderness' as it was meant to be an insect haven. We have planted sunflowers from seeds, and planted them out once they were sturdy enough to fend for themselves in the garden area. We also planted and transplanted pansies, and have designed bee friendly bee homes to try to encourage bees to hibernate and 'stay around' our school area. This was a totally hands on activity that the children wholeheartedly embraced-I have never had a class so keen to get their hands into soil and grow plants from seed.

What type of project did your class undertake? Food Bank Project
Great kit. Kids loved that they got to work with others members in our hub to come up with project ideas. Our hub decided to do a food drive to help out our local kai shed. We were able to repurpose empty boxes that we had been given, and decorated these in a festive manner.

The idea of the kit was great - we tried to tweak it due to lockdown - but this virtual idea was too abstract for the students.

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? That we enhanced the look of the area, but also had the mindset to create an area to attract more native birds and species to the area. This will be an on-going project for our group and students of the school.

As our last planned community project was postponed from this years Covid lockdown, we have been lucky enough to plan, a project helping out to plant and care for a community garden area near our school.

Because of lockdown and other circumstances, we were not able to fully complete the process but this didn't stop the students involved being fully engaged and motivated in the ideas and actions behind giving back to their community.
