This kit was an awesome experience for my Year 2/3 class as it opened their minds to volunteer work, but also nature and our community around us. They met some lovely people who also care for the community garden, continue to work on clearing harakeke close to school and ensuring our school grounds are clean of rubbish.

This was a fantastic kit to get the students thinking about others and how they could help them. We were going to go sing at the local rest home and take them cards and treats but we had to modify the students' plan because of Covid levels. They then decided to clean up the local park and skate ramp. The kit helped them to all feel like they were part of a team and defined the roles for them.

I ran the SVA kit the same I did last year, with my class working in small groups. Each group worked through find, build, act, share stage with their project. I did find that this year, having Y4/5 students I had to manage/prompt much more than I did last with the Y5/6 students.

This kit was good for developing students Character. Their understanding of empathy and what it is to be a volunteer grew. It made them aware that we don't always have to do things and get a reward for it.
