I ran this course for a level 9 and 10 health class. The Year 9 Students engaged in planning and running a tree planting day in a riparian zone at a local maraie. Not only did the students develop planning skills, but due to the student-driven nature of this kit, they engaged positively with an important aspect of their community and learnt about the ecology and biodiversity of riparian terrain and the benefits of regenerating this ecosystem. They managed to plant roughly 300 trees in 1 day. The Year 10 health class focused their learning on the impact of poverty in low-income areas and planned a food and goods drive, which they then repackaged into care packets that they delivered on a weekend to socially and physically isolated populations and to families in low socioeconomic conditions. This class managed to distribute 60 parcels containing canned, packaged and fresh food, clothing, toys, seeds, treats, seedlings, hygiene products and cleaning products.

This is a great resource for getting children to think outside their immediate circle and encouraged discussion around volunteering vs. paying money and acknowledging/appreciating the time others give. Lots of great learning within this kit.

What was the impact of your volunteering project on the targeted community? Fed tummies and fed minds!
We finally got around this using our kit in Term 4 and it was perfect timing as my children were noticing more and more children in our school needing kai. So we decided on a team mission (it looked a little different to how to was suggest to run the project) to get donations for the New Plymouth Foodbank... and that we did! We still have donations rolling in, even though we are finished for the year. Another great kit and I thank you for your support, School Kit, ka mutu pea! Room 19 loved completely the SVA kit. Such a great kit to end the year. Our class goal was to bring joy to the local residents at Lara Lodge retirement home. We read stories, sang carols and provided morning tea for the resin and staff.

What was the impact of your volunteering project on the targeted community? Helping towards the church being able to get a new roof.
The Ava kit was a good way for our class to develop ideas for a school fundraising project. By exploring ideas through the lense of the sva, students were hooked into the idea of service.
