“I got the SVA kit, and it was such a great resource for my Year 3 &; 4 class. Everything was presented in a lovely way, and the children loved getting badges and wristbands to really help them feel like they were part of a team and contributing to something. It was good to have the kit to guide us through a topic/inquiry around making a difference, and even though we adapted some things to suit us a bit better everything still worked and went according to plan.”

“Our kaiwhakahaere senior leaders, organised our tamariki into groups for planting Native trees. This was in support of planting a million trees initiative by Government. We work with Whaea Lisl who with the leaders organised transport and the kai for tamariki after the planting. Thanks to the Maraetotara Trust for this opportunity to assist in regenerating areas requiring stability of soil in Papatuanuku.”

“The kit was great, although some aspects were a little advanced for our Year 2 learners. We adapted and made it fit our setting with success though. The children were great problem solvers and it really helped them think about others not just themselves.”

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? The local bush has had the tradescantia removed so that native seedlings can flourish. The steps have been mended to allow easy access to the bush. This allows easier access to the bush for the whole community.

This year we took a science based green space focus, where we engaged with local experts to find out the best course of action to improve the overall mauri levels in the local key native ecosystem.”
