Our kaiwhakahaere senior leaders, organised our tamariki into groups for planting Native trees. This was in support of planting a million trees initiative by Government. We work with Whaea Lisl who with the leaders organised transport and the kai for tamariki after the planting. Thanks to the Maraetotara Trust for this opportunity to assist in regenerating areas requiring stability of soil in Papatuanuku.

What type of project did your class undertake? Staying in Touch from Afar
The kit was great, although some aspects were a little advanced for our Year 2 learners. We adapted and made it fit our setting with success though. The children were great problem solvers and it really helped them think about others not just themselves.

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? The local bush has had the tradescantia removed so that native seedlings can flourish. The steps have been mended to allow easy access to the bush. This allows easier access to the bush for the whole community.

What type of project did your class undertake? Greenspace Project, Water Based Project
This is the second time that we have used this kit. It is motivational, easy to use and creates a strong culture amongst the class. This year we took a science based green space focus, where we engaged with local experts to find out the best course of action to improve the overall mauri levels in the local key native ecosystem.

We have used SVA in the past. This year we took a green space and water based focus with the aim of improving the ecosystem within our local bush. Students worked alongside local experts to identify areas of need, and find the best solutions to improve the health of the bush.

What type of project did your class undertake? Project for Those in Need
We will be carrying out our SVA project for the whole year as interruptions with isolating of tamariki and heavy rain in our district, made it difficult to complete this term. We are working with whanau and the community to develop an area of our football fields, to assist giving of kai to the whanau and kaumatua of the community. Our year will consist of preparation of gardens, boxing and fences to alleviate pests pukeko getting in and eating kai. We have continued our project from the marae to our own at kura.

Really enjoyed this kit. We were focusing on citizenship and leadership this term so having the students able to direct themselves to run projects and act as citizens in meaningful, authentic contexts was fantastic.
