Bite L.A.B Taste Experiments Reviews

Our low vision and blind learners loved the smell activities. This linked clearly to our creative writing and many laughs were had at the poems that were created.

The kit was well thought out and students loved the smelly stickers! We had a great time testing the science behind our food as well as reviewing each lunch as they came in.

I found the kit helped bring to light some of the assumptions that I had about my students understanding of food, tastes, flavours, etc... and the vocabulary they needed to be able to talk about all of it. We all really got into smelling the various cards, however it was quite challenging getting them to relate them to a memory and not just a type of food or something that might contain it. Getting the students to work in pairs and listen to the But Why? podcast and complete the activity for it helped. The students were fully engaged when experimenting with the various sorting algorithms to find their favourite flavour. There were lots of great discussions between the students when working as a whole class, group or in pairs. It was a very interactive kit and there were so many different parts to it that I found it easy to get side tracked and veer off from the lesson plan. Because of this I don't think we covered everything completely. I will definitely revisit parts of this again throughout the year.

It found it quite tricky to do with some of my new entrants

The boys have loved the scratch and sniff activities, makinng links to the different decribing words for tastes. Many struggled with the stroop test sheet as they weren't able to read the words on their own. They did enjoy watching me try! We found that the boys were braver in trying the lunches, however due to the menu being very predictable and the boys knowing which they liked and didn't there wasn't a lot of change in the waste. Some days the food was just not to their liking even though we tried adding flavours, removed bits, warmed it up or toasted the sandwiches. It didn't help that our supplier freezes the food prior to sending it out so there have been times when it is still too cold or soggy.

The kids loved this kit and being able to experiment with other things they had not done yet. The smell test was a real hit for some whereas others had the best reactions to some of them. We are still working on this kit but so far so good!

Really awesome that the kit supplied everything we needed to complete the tasks. Some of the activities were tricky to complete as a single class of new entrants but there was still enough for us to be able to do. Thanks so much for this free resource it was very much appreciated.
