What opportunities have arisen for future learning from this kit? From the smell test activity, my akomanga are more aware of different smells and we can do this in other ways, such as walking around our kura and thinking about what we smell there.

How did this kit promote student engagement and enjoyment around taste literacy/fair testing/reducing waste? My akomanga only did the smell tests, however through doing this they all become more aware of different smells and were able to have their own opinion about it. No answer was wrong.

How has the taste literacy of your students developed throughout this kit? My tauira learnt a lot about different smells and where they would find those smells.

“My tauira really enjoyed our taste kit activities, in particular, the smell activity. They each were asked to guess what the smell of the sticker was and rate on a scale 1 - 10 (1 being the least favourite smell to 10 being the best smell) where they would put that particular smell. It was highly interactive where my tauira discussed every smell they smelt.”

How has this kit help develop the resilience of your learners? The engagement and physical movements of the activities kept them so occupied they just kept wanting more or wandering what the next activity was. Students showed lots of patience and collaboration.

What opportunities have arisen for future learning from this kit? Students have asked to do more poetry so we will be planning for more poetry this term. They have used some of the taste vocabulary in the class so we could make a word wall to encourage others.

The scratch and sniff activity was very engaging even though they were put off by some smells. They kept going and wanted to do more. All the cards and resources were bright and eye catching to them and they felt special having things to do on their own.

How has the taste literacy of your students developed throughout this kit? The reminder about figurative language devices was important for my students as we had not had the opportunity to include them in our writing topics this year.

“We really enjoyed this kit and the exciting activities that came with it. We enjoyed the discussions around how temperature and sound affect our eating habits. I was able to get the majority of activities done with my smaller lockdown school. The students enjoyed exploring the taste cards and writing poetry. I would highly recommend this kit to anyone. The activities were easy to follow and all supplies were ready to go.”
