“The taste kit was good, the students were ok with the activities, some just didn't want to do them as they were busy with other mahi. Overall the kit was fully stocked and easy to follow the activities.”

What opportunities have arisen for future learning from this kit? We actually used it to further extend our digital technology, particularly algorithms using scratch.

How did this kit promote student engagement and enjoyment around taste literacy/fair testing/reducing waste? The students were very keen to be proactive in eliminating waste and given so much has been initially wasted with lunches in school it linked very well to working hard on finding solutions for our school as a whole.

How has the taste literacy of your students developed throughout this kit? Many of the students in my classes had never before seen some of the words we used in this kit e.g. zesty, tangy, mushy, sickly and so on. In this way this kit has provided them with a whole new perspective on words used to describe taste and smell.

“This was a really neat kit and tied in so well with our Science Focus and the fact we receive Bite Lab lunches. The smell and taste cards were fantastic and really challeged the classes thinking. The way we were able to build upon some of the Digital Technology thinking and experiement as classes were eating lunches was so cool and the sandwich haiku writing was a success!”

How has this kit help develop the resilience of your learners? Getting to overcome fear of trying new food - most wouldn't - however with peers giving it a go, seemed more acceptable to try

What opportunities have arisen for future learning from this kit? Try new food (lunch provided by Bitelab) prior to kit, most in the class would not try unless it was something they were familiar with at home. After kit, class more acceptable at trying first

“Some of the activities were really good, others were hard to do, like the eat the same lunch but at different room temperatures. Kids loved the smelly stickers although they eventually all smelt the same lol. A good kit but just did not work for us in a single cell class with one teacher.”

“My class help deliver the Lunches in Schools to every class at our school each day which gave them a real connection to the BiteLab kit. They loved the smelly stickers and shared them with lots of other students and adults (especially the yucky smelling ones). We wrote and published some wonderful Haiku. The students really enjoyed the experiments that we did.”

“We were hesitant to try new things in our room, but after exploring the smells and experiments in the kit we are risk takers. We loved learning about the way our senses were linked to our idea of taste and even shared this during our student conferences. Blindfolding our Whaanau was lots of fun. Some of them were very nervous. A fabulous kit which helped make learning about food, healthy eating, and our senses/bodies lots of fun!! Such a great set of ideas to explore.”
