“We are a rural school with many farmer family’s in our class. This topic was a great hit with the class and allowed us to integrate so many math skills while working in mixed ability groups and everyone still playing a part. Our plans have been slightly depleted and we have nit completed the actually Olympics gets, however the children are extremely excited about completing these activities next week. Thank you.”
“Track the Tanker was amazing! The planning and resources were so easy to follow. The students loved the activities and they learnt lots of different skills. They loved the Cow-Olympics and took ownership over the whole thing. It was such an awesome day! One kid (Year 7) in my class was full of such joy when doing the glove activity. He said ";I've never played with water. This is my first time";. What a great opportunity for the kids!”
“Thanks guys - we really enjoyed the kit! Never seen kids so motivated to use protractors - and so great that the context was authentic. We can all use protractors and have a better understanding of the dairy industry - result!”
“My students (Y6-8) thoroughly enjoyed this unit. It provided opportunity to learn measurement in an authentic context and included such a variety of tasks.
We were very fortunate to be able to explore some aspects of the unit in further detail as our current Teacher Aide is also a dairy farmer. She even brought us in some milk straight from the cowshed!
Some kids used protractors and compasses for the first time, while others enjoyed using the floor planner website to design houses. Everybody enjoyed the grand finale Cow Olympics and I was impressed with how each group adapted their activity to make it their own, rather than just copying the task card.
This unit catered for everybody!”
“Hi there, I think the Track the Tanker kit has been interesting for my class. We are still partway through it just because the kit arrived later than the start of term and we still have 2 weeks to go. The last 2 weeks we are really going to drum it home!
Angles and using a protractor is actually in Level 4 of the curriculum, so I have had to extend my students with this - I have had to teach them a lot about angles which is not really their 'needs' at Level 3 of the curriculum. So maybe this has kept me from making it a 5 star as it hasn't been easy.
I also find the huge amount of influence from other educators on the Facebook page off putting - some teachers have made assumptions about how it is meant to be taught and influenced conversations which has put me off.
I will maybe add more detail once I have finished the kit, had the Cow Olympics and really got into the nitty gritty. We have a very intense timetable at the moment. We have specialty music, science and art lessons which pull the students out of the classroom a lot! So I am dedicating some quality time then.”
“This was an engaging activity where students were immersed in the learning. They were completing different measurement skills such as estimation, length, direction and weight. There love for mathematics in the past 2 weeks has grown greatly due to their love of learning in an authentic context.”
