“This was a great kit ! the students loved learning about the science element of this cake as well as the hands-on practicality of making their very own vegetable cakes. What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? I think it gave us as teachers a little boost and excitement to keep challenging ourselves and how we teach certain areas, making hands-on and the process a great chance through something quite simple.

“This was an excellent kit that supported our Science learning we had planned greatly as a school division. It was fantastic to have the practical aspects and the opportunity for students to test, change, review and refine their learning. The students were engaged and most were able to see great progress and meet all of the lesson key areas, ensuring they reduced sugar and explored possible replacements. What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? The lockdown happened just after we had finished the kit. Part of the home learning was to create more cupcakes using vegetables. i think the parents enjoyed the enthusiasm the children bought to the idea of putting vegetables into the cupcakes.

“My Year 1/2 class loved this kit. We did it as a class and there was a lot of negativity about putting vegetables into the cake. It was super successful starting with the sweetcorn . The fact that they looked like cupcakes meant that everyone had a taste. Blending the sweetcorn smooth definitely made it more successful. They loved the cupcakes and were willing to try other combinations of vegetables. Very successful kit. Will definitely do it again.”

We had previously done a lot of observational work for science and it was of benefit for them to be able to use precise language to compare outcomes. They all enjoyed the opportunity to justify their changes.

“The kit reinforced for the kids that even though they could make the product healthier it did have consequences. We had lots of discussion around if it was worth it to compromise the flavour, or just keep it original and eat it less often. The class was fairly split on which they preferred. It did encourage them to take risks and make changes to recipes - they realised they didn't need to be set in stone, but some risks didn't work as well as others.”
