How did the context of baking a cake help engage your students in science and maths learning? We tied it in really well to our measurement programme which was perfect, especially for the students that need hands on learning activities.

“Kit looked great. I did try to cancel the kit as I realzied it wasn't going to use in a visual art room. I passed on the kit to our food tech teacher. But with lockdown we haven't been able to use yet.”

How did the context of baking a cake help engage your students in science and maths learning? They were engaged in the measuring and mixing of the cake. Chemical reactions were interesting as we hadn't really done a lot of science until this point so had a lot of discussion and chat about that. Videos were helpful and kids enjoyed them.

“Fantastic kit. They absolutely loved it. They were really surprised how a cake doesn't have to be chocolate or vanilla and what we could add to a cake to make it healthy. The vocabulary we were using became second nature and they were excited for each lesson. Instructions were super easy to follow too.”

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? I would try this with groups again, and it is a great way to see the strengths of the kids with living skills and science. Leaders emerge and so do bosses! We will do something like this again.

“Lots of fun. great science, very engaged class. High excitement and lots of noise in class (middle school primary) but so much talk, team work and trying hard to work together. The instructions were very easy to follow and after the repetitions in class for a week the terminology and vocabulary became part of the class discussions. Great science, social skills, oral language, maths. A wonderful integrated unit. The scales make it so easy to measure for the kids and it is very well thought out.”

How did the context of baking a cake help engage your students in science and maths learning? Enjoyed the links to other chemical reactions. Lots of discussion about fair testing and it was interesting when they had to accurately measure their ingredients.

“Kids loved the hands on activities and there was lots of discussion and negotiating occuring throughout the activities. We ran out of time but would like to take it step further with having a blind tasting plates and trying to pick out which veggies were in the cake.”
