Kids loved it. They liked being creative and experimenting with a product that they could eat as an end result. Having ownership of what they were creating.

As usual the school kit team does it again. Our kids so loved the experiences and I so loved the cross curricular teaching experience. Exploring measurement and enjoying strange tastes were hilarous.

This is the second time I have done this school kit with my class (two different groups of students - last year and this year) and both times have been great! My class loved the idea of a veggie cake and the science behind combining these traditionally "healthy"ingredients together to make something "sweet or unhealthy".

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Due to my dietary requirements we did have a discussion on substitution of other ingredients such as milk & eggs. This introduced us to label reading and preservatives and the nutrition information.

How did the context of baking a cake help engage your students in science and maths learning? We focussed a great deal on identifying the differences between physical and chemical changes. Along with accurate measurements and converting measurements and substituting other ingredients. This is because I am personally living with coeliac disease.

Who doesn't love cake! By including addition, subtraction and as the kids called it "backwards and forwards math"it made learning relatable to every stuff in life! I used this kit to really get into science and I had a big focus on chemical & physical changes along with introducing the scientific method. Also great to look at ingredient substitution not just for the sugar and maths content but able to have the discussion on inclusiveness when it comes to allergies and dietary requirements
