How did the context of baking a cake help engage your students in science and maths learning? This linked in wonderfully to our Technology Challenge that we are competing in next Term! We experimented with plain recipes and looked at substitute ingredients that we could add to improve taste, texture, appearance as well as other components to make

Wow this kit was awesome! Who knew that peas would taste so good in muffins! This kit was used alongside a Great Technology Challenge that we are entering next Term. We loved experimenting with different ingredients to create different cakes and muffins.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? it will be great to reuse some of this kit in maths next year and use the cross-curricular potential to integrate an inquiry unit. As mentioned above, I would be keen to investigate alternative icing/decorating options, and the learners wish to keep refin

How did the context of baking a cake help engage your students in science and maths learning? The bubble strategy and just discussions around reactions were great. We used a video of chemical reactions to spark interest without telling our learners why we were doing it. The maths link could have had more focus, and if we'd had more time we would e

The vege cake was a great kit. Our students found it really engaging and it opened their minds to alternative options. It also encouraged targeted research as the learners worked to uncover suitable replacements. It covered off many curriculum areas, including science, maths, writing, and health. If we'd had more time in the term we would have probably used it even more. The final cake was interesting, and the review cards a useful way to look for even more improvements. A great kit we can use again and again. Maybe a healthy icing option is the next step for us?

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Now that students have made a large number of batches of cakes and we have established their competency around the rules of using the staffroom and other areas respectfully, I am looking forward to having baking as an extension activity. The idea of

How did the context of baking a cake help engage your students in science and maths learning? We went really deep into the science with lots of discussions around gluten, gas and different ways bakers achieve rising within their cakes. Exact measurements, temperatures and portioning within a group led to some great hands on learning within the m

Teacher of Yr 6/7 students here. This was a really well thought out and put together activity kit. I really liked that it incorporated multiple exits and entries for different students. We had some very creative veggie cakes towards the end with students incorporating things like fried onion and mashed kumura. The peas were not a hit! The cake planning and rating review templates were well laid out and easy to follow visually. I probably appreciated this more than the kids because it made for less hand holding / dragging through the preparation stages before the (fun) cooking and (fun) eating. We started this unit in week 3 of Term 3 and spent a lot of time looking at the rising strategies. We looked at steam by making croissants and profiteroles, and the function of baking soda/powder with various reactions and hokey pokey. We also whipped up egg (and chickpea brine) to make meringue. In the end, due to time constraints coming back to a busy end of term (crammed in by Covid lockdowns), I wasn't able to scaffold the final landing as much as I had wanted/planned. Still the kids had lots of background knowledge and set off making cakes of all shapes and colours. One area that I didn't get a chance to cover but I think was a real sticking point for my kids was viscosity of batter. The additions / substitutions under fat, sugar, egg, flour was too simplistic in this dimension. We had a few mixtures that fell flat (couldn't keep their air bubbles in) due to being too runny or were too thick and subsequently dense. I would set up a viscosity test right at the start and give students the opportunity to calibrate trial batch batter to the initial batter mix. (Although we spent a lot of time looking at rising strategies, I think this could have been a more crucial area in terms of actual edibility!). Outside of the science components, math learning was certainly reinforced with the accurate measurement of ingredients. It was also nice seeing lots of robust discussions (i.e. arguments) about what to try next! Thanks again for putting this together for us and sorry this review is so late!

How did the context of baking a cake help engage your students in science and maths learning? Using specific measurements was great. Children had fun finding items that weighed certain amounts. They understand the importance of weighing ingredients correctly in order to have a successful outcome. Researching everyday scientific reactions was enl

The kids in our class loved this kit! Learning that cooking is science was a revelation to some children. Then getting to be scientists and use prediction, research, trial and error was fantastic. All cakes turned out better the second time round and all children were proud of their achievements. I will definitely be using this systematic approach to cooking with our kids again as they have all requested it. And they want to experiment with more vegetables :)

This was a great opportunity during lockdown to explore real life practical mathematics. The students had fun creating their own versions at home and one of the favourites was a kumera and apple cake with cream cheese icing. There were great discussions held when we returned to school about the failures and successes. The students loved the science behind the kit.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? We ended up making one huge vegie cake with all the leftover ingredients. (it was actually good!). We wrote about it and want to try some more 'unique' cooking next year.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? How we can add vegetables to other foods to increase our five a day while reducing the amount of fat and carbs. Eg in a curry or spaghetti bolognaise.

How did the context of baking a cake help engage your students in science and maths learning? Science learning was about how the baking powder in the self raising flour makes bubbles as it heats and the cake cooks around the bubbles before they burst. The students were fascinated to see the little holes in their cakes where the bubbles had been.

The kids loved putting different vegetables into their little cakes and the chickpea was the definite winner for its caramel tasting sweetness. They especially liked seeing the different colors of the mixture and the cooked cakes. This was a winner in showing they can get extra fruit and vegetables in and also reduce the sugar.

How did the context of baking a cake help engage your students in science and maths learning? The mixing of different ingredients showed the children how reactions happen in science. It made them think about what other things could be mixed together and how different things change when mixed. There was lots of measuring, and estimating too.
