How did the context of baking a cake help engage your students in science and maths learning? The students love the practical side of learning so the context of cake and the experiments we did leading up to the baking were enjoyed by all. I really enjoyed guiding the students through this learning process and challenging their ideas around using vegetables to make a cake. Most of the students were pleasantly surprised that the cake could still taste like cake when using healthier ingredients. There were some failures as well as successes. Students were motivated to keep trying different recipe substitutes to find a recipe that was perfect. The lessons promoted a growth mindset and an opportunity for future inquiry. The students have asked to continue this next term so that shows they are enjoying the experimenting and testing process. Initially students thought that the only vegetable you could use in cake was carrot. Now they have more of an open mind and I believe they will try some of these ideas at home in the future.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? It has definitely encouraged more interaction with our measurement tools in the classroom, especially during their time and not instructional time. We are part of the healthy lunch in schools programme and for some, they are being introduced to new foods.

This kit was an awesome introduction for many of the learners to some science concepts. I was particularly impressed with how easily this kit enabled connections to be made with science concepts and the real world. The learners loved it and grew to be very particular and precise with their recipe writing and measuring.

This kit gave us an opportunity to explore science, maths and team building. Our science thinking was expanded by the chemical reaction part of the kit and then again when we baked. Understanding measurement, division and multiplication further developed our mathematical thinking. Our ability to work together as a team was tested multiple times throughout the kit from turn taking, forming shared opinions and our learning to compromise was demonstrated. Great kit and great fun.
