“It did become an issue when lockdown happened but the ongoing support from School Kit help heaps. My students did it at home but I have to say, not all of them engaged with home learning. Initially, in school, the student engagement was high and we did lots of class discussion around the science of baking.”

“Fantastic kit that was user friendly (for both Teacher and Students). I loved the resource links and the printables were colourful and appealing to the students. I expanded on the available vege choice as I have a fit for purpose Food Room to teach from. My only negative would be that we dont have a New World in Gisborne to enable me to supplement ingredients with the card but that was not a barrier to me using the kit. The students really enjoyed this kit. Thank you.”

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Creating new recipes for the canteen that the students can try and adapt using veges as a base ingredient

How did the context of baking a cake help engage your students in science and maths learning? Students understood measurement, fractions and adding measurements together alot easier than if just being taught the usual way. Trail and error and things not always working the first time was a great science concept to teach through fair testing.

“My esol students have had so much fun learning about chemical changes, experimenting with ingredients. It has enabled them to share this information with their classes, with confidence (which they usually lack). We have had interesting opinions on the kit vegetables, because the students are from different counties and their thoughts and tastes are very different. We are still yet to make the cakes, due to covid, but i know they will have so much fun and it will help extend their english language. It has also been perfect timing as we have just rebuilt our gardens, ready for planting in term 4. And after completing the kit, we will experiment making cakes with the vegetables we griw in our garden. A fabulous kit! Thank you”

“The class loved the unknown and adventure ahead. It was plenty of fun. Who doesn't love food and baking. The plan was much needed. I know some students ended up trying out different vegetables in baking at home. This kit certainly helped us all think differently about our favourite, or least fav veggies.”
