“Wow, what a fantastic unit of work. Our students have been engaged throughout and learnt a range of skills. We've included learning around different forms of sugar and why vegetables are important to suit our learning area - Food Technology. Students have improved their understanding of Maths, Science and Technology process. A real highlight has been the excitement in seeing the final products and having every single student produce an edible vegetable cake. We were lucky to have the Principal come and join our class in tasting these cakes. This unit has allowed the teachers to be learning alongside students which is something that has been very powerful. I'm excited to do this unit again with another group of students.”
“The students loved this project so much - it was a really great length, very achievable in the timeframe. There was a definite oversupply of paper recipes and revaluations though, especially considering the amount of ingredients.
It was a good context to introduce key chemistry concepts.”
“Students loved the creativity and learning that went along with this. They thoroughly enjoyed exploring what main ingredients can be substituted for healthier options, and they enjoyed the trial and error side of it. They never thought that vegetables in cupcakes could be yummy, but you learn something every day! They now understand the make up of a good baker, and why the bubble level in cooking is important. Great kit!”
“I cannot recommend this kit highly enough. My Year 4-5 class learned so much about chemical reactions and how to apply the science to their projects. The supporting documentation was excellent and really took the guesswork out of the planning - I just had to follow the links and instructions and adapt them to my class. All of the students were engaged from the beginning to the end and I was really impressed with the depth of their learning. Awesome kit - Thank you so much Schoolkit - I'm hooked!”
“Great for a really busy term. The class enjoyed creating their own recipes incorporating an unfamiliar vegetable. Identifying properties of vegetables to make things sweeter proved challenging for the class but they really liked the challenge. A lot of work is needed to unpack with the students; so don't rush it!”
“The kids have loved the opportunity to bake at school and enjoyed learning about the science behind cooking.
We were limited with resources at our school- baking equipment which did restrict the amount of time that we could allow to this kit. We found sharing one set of scales a challenge.
We did enjoy the freedom the kit allowed- the kids enjoying getting creative with their cake flavours and looked at taking it to the next step- decorating. I liked the healthy food talk it also created when trying to reduce sugar and up our vegetable intake.”
“The initial web/based information was a lot to take in at first and I was confused with having to mark items as completed. Once I was able to read the teacher notes and go through the steps it was much clearer. The links to resources and information to explain all of the different aspects of making the cakes was very good. This was a great way of putting our learning from science week into practise. There were great opportunities for the learners to strengthen the science capabilities.”
“Great kit with supporting resources. Kids were amazed to find that when adding vegetables, cake can still be delicious. It linked perfectly to our inquiry unit around physical and chemical change.”
