“The children became very creative with what vegetables they wanted to put into the cake. Due to the range of different cultures in my class the students offered alternatives to the usual vegetables as this is what they have at home.
We looked specifically at the change that each vegetable made to the cake. The beetroot chocolate cake we made was a real favourite.”
“The concept of exchanging one ingredient for another met the science aim we had of introducing how to experiment and have a control or base, in this case it was cupcakes. We went with changing one variable at a time.
To stay with the scientific process we fully swapped 60gm of an ingredient. The cakes were quite edible on the whole.
The clips provided to explain the science behind baking were very good and developed our researching capabilities further.
It was quite a challenge organizing the other ingredients and cost more than was given.”
“We had great fun trialling the veggie cakes. We had a challenge between groups of kids and teachers to see who could come up with the yummiest cakes, and blind selection of ingredients.
Some kids were reluctant to taste some of the cakes but they enjoyed the process of trialling different combinations of the vegetables! The favourite flavour was anything with the apple in it - not really a surprise!
Thanks for another great kit. We enjoyed this almost as much as the ice-cream kit.”
“We swapped out one ingredient for another - to develop the beginning of the scientific fair testing process we kept one variable per test so opted to swap out 60 grams for 60 grams of vegetable rather than several vegetables of various weights at once. We did 2 tests. 2 groups worked together so if group 1's vegetable swap was successful then group 2 built on that and swapped a second vegetable. Some were successful, some had kids rushing to the fountain to rinse out their mouths! There was quite a lot of organizing and preparation. So far the event times have clashed with duties and staff meetings.”
