How did the context of baking a cake help engage your students in science and maths learning? Realising that sugar could be substituted with other ingredients that have a sugar content. The measurement component alongside the chemical reactions when combining certain ingredients. Learning how each component helps the cake form in a particular way.

“Unfortunately, I left getting to do this kit until late this term and could only manage a few children getting the chance to carry out the chemistry of baking. But oh how those children totally engaged with swapping out sugar content for a vege/or fruit component. They were keen to try a lot of different ideas and I'm sure they will now they have the 60/60/60/60 cemented in their brain. Filling out the reviews to compare their results was fun and I'm sure they didn't even realise they were learning.”

“This kit was fun and interesting to do. The children worked collaboratively to design, measure ingredients, make, eat and review the cakes. After the first session they had interesting conversations about the chemistry and flavour of their cakes and were keen to explore more.”

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? We have Garden to Table in our school, so the students have been very interested in finding out how they can use the vegetables that they grow in the garden in less traditional recipes, specifically baking.

How effective was this kit in promoting healthy eating in your classroom?

How did the context of baking a cake help engage your students in science and maths learning? They were fascinated by chemical reactions and realising that chemistry is constantly happening around them. With a specific recipe my students were very thorough in their measurements as they had a few issues around being exact.

“My class absolutely loved this kit! We have had a really hectic term (like everyone does in Term 4) but they always made sure that we came back to our Vege Cake Kit. My students loved being able to test the different recipes that they came up with and that they were able to try things out rather than just having to use a recipe from a cookbook like they normally do. And some of them realised that maybe their experiments may have been replacing the ingredients of a cake, but was it actually a cake!?!”
