Well resourced with a good selection. It took a bit to organise and figure out the logistics to complete it. I was able to tie it in with our science fair as a whole class example experiment. I'll try to do it again next year with a few of my own tweaks.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? You could use this method for many things the kids eat to think about healthy eating - burgers / shakes / anything at all. You could also incorporate this into what they choose to grow in their school vege garden. Lots of inspiration for next year.

How did the context of baking a cake help engage your students in science and maths learning? They are pretty engaged in general, but were incredibly engaged with this particular unit. They love baking, and it was awesome to see the groups critique each thing they made and make adjustments.

Loved this Kit. It is my favourite one so far. So much maths we were able to incorporate, and science and health as well. The children were really thoughtful in their substitutions, reading labels, lots of discussion and comments such as 'this is sweet, so has sugar in it, so we could substitute this for some of the sugar', and 'avocado is really fatty, we could swap out some of the butter'. Loved the thinking and collaboration that went into it. And best of all, it was fun and highly engaging. Loved it.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Children wanted to keep trying different ideas. They were keen to see if aquafaba could come from other vegetables, like the liquid in the garden peas? They also wanted to try other scales and measuring different things.

This has been the best kit yet. I did not share the cake poster till after the children had researched what flour, fat, sugar and egg do in cake. We used the poster as our answer guide. I loved that the children had to find out what words like leavening meant. They then went on to notice bubbles in the school pool and said "Hey that is like carbonated water, we could catch those and use them as leavening!" The results were amazing and the pictures tell it all. Peas in a cake...not thank you. We saved this kit for the last week of term. It was perfect. Math, reading, writing, science, discussion... true integration.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Continue to look at how to incorporate te reo Māori into cooking/baking lessons. I could easily use this unit again with some of the vegetables we grow in our school māra!

How did the context of baking a cake help engage your students in science and maths learning? Through lots of predictions, observations and measurements, the students were highly engaged. Ensuring their substitutions equalled 80grams, and how we could use the scales to accurately measure the weight.

This was a great kit to use with our bubble students upon returning to school after lockdown. It was engaging because of the kai aspect, and the base recipe was easy to follow, and tasted great! The concept of including vegetables in a cake was foreign to most students and it was a great way to challenge preconceived ideas about taste. They loved using the recipe cards and review cards that were included in the kit, and the scales were a great resource to use, especially when checking out what in the classroom actually weighs 60grams. I appreciated the helpful tips that were easily accessible on the Make a Vegetable Cake page!

My class loved this kit! It stimulated a lot of independent and group research - at home and in the kitchen. Researching and testing different vegetables as replacement ingredients was thought provoking and discussed animatedly. One group decided to "mush the peas"and insert the pea mash in the centre of the cake. Their reasoning..... if someone didn't like peas, they could eat all the "good bits' around the outside. Their work at home and in the classroom transferred brilliantly into our first ever visit to the Food Technology room. Students learned a lot from their mistakes during the unit - students had "nailed"the use of the kitchen scales in the classroom, but at the cooking station, that knowledge disappeared . However, during their second cooking session, students were measuring each ingredient very carefully.... A great kit. Thank you!
