How did the context of baking a cake help engage your students in science and maths learning? Maths was used continually throughout the measuring, substituting process and scientific thinking was utilised when hypothesising the properties that each substitute ingredient would provide.

“We were able to make a start on this kit and the children really enjoyed creating their adjusted recipes but lockdown meant we were unable to complete the kit. Still some really interesting conversations arose around substitute ingredients and the properties of food that were valuable for students.”

We did them in small muffins and students enjoyed this and trialing different substitutions to their recipe. “The kids of Room 15 loved this kit! i had to adapt a little and direct the recipe adjustments but they were so involved and interested. We set it up as a blind tasting and tried all of the cakes. It was cool to hear comments like... "I would never eat that in real life but in a cake beetroot was yummy and sweet", "I liked the hummus (chickpeas) ones the best and hummus is usually yuck".”
