What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Trying other vegetables in a cake, making a large cake and working out the required amount of time for it to cook. E.g pumpkin, zucchini. Researching recipes that use other vegetables

How did the context of baking a cake help engage your students in science and maths learning? Doing everything in stages and talking about variables etc made it such an enjoyable series of science lessons. Made everyone measure and observe, make predictions and experiment in a safe way.

The kids enjoyed this kit and realising that they could substitute veggies into their baking. They also found out a lot about exact measurements . It was great to look into the nutritional values of food too and how the chemical reactions occur.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Exploring other concepts that can be presented as an investigation...e.g soils (what happens if...'x' is added) water (what happens if 'x' is added)

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Further work with chemical reactions, now they have a basic understanding of the concept. More observations - this kit taught the students that they need to look for certain things eg. bubbles because it meant... Having a control, trialling and then mak

How did the context of baking a cake help engage your students in science and maths learning? It was great to look at chemical reactions before and also learn about the Malliard Reaction so they were able to understand some of the changes that the cake had made when baked. By substituting 80g of the cake with veggies was a good challenge and a lot

I absolutely love this kit! The whole idea of the 60g x 4 was a bit to get our heads around...can you really make a cake?! It was a terrific way to introduce chemistry to the students. The observations to find the bubbles in the cake encouraged the children to stop, look and think about the chemical reaction that had taken place. I will definitely do this again!

This kit was great, it was very practical and the thinking and re-thinking that was required was excellent. The children loved making their cakes and told me it tasted delicious even though it didn't really look very appetising. I would have liked to spend more time on testing different variables, but I hadn't allowed enough time. It also fitted in well with the veges we had grown in our school vege garden. The kit involved excellent links to maths, science and literacy.

A fun activity for a group, lots of experimenting and students enjoyed it. Going any further was hindered by lockdown in Auckland unfortunately. Well done team for another great kit.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? We looked at what food groups there are, what food groups are important to eat. We also looked at which parts of plants we were eating, we explored this kit under the context of Kaitiakitanga, in which we looked at how we could look after our bodies and e

How did the context of baking a cake help engage your students in science and maths learning? They were so engaged, they baked three times as they naturally begun to make connections to scientific thinking. Without me having to prompt, they begun to reflect and suggest new hypotheses and wanted to go through the testing phase again. Each time they

My students loved getting to bake, experiment, retest and some of them enjoyed eating the vegetables! Many improved their bakes as they got to their test #2 after many of their first tests failed. They went back to the recipe card and re-read what each ingredient did and then rewrote their recipe. They were far more successful the second experiment. The scientific reflecting happened naturally for many without prompting, although they did need guidance on going back to look at what specific function each ingredient has. Unfortunately a couple of students could not get past the fact we were putting vegetables in - but all the others loved the idea and enjoyed testing and for the most part the tasting.
