How effective were the components of this kit?
Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them
These were some written reflections from those students who were able to bake at school: "I wasn't sure about vegetables being in sweet food but turned out I don't mind", "It was really cool to bake and measure things as I don't get to do this at home", "I liked doing all the measuring things and then mixing it all together. They tasted yum."
Which kit components were the most impactful and why?
The measuring units and the chart to show the steps - it fitted with our procedural writing as well as modelling an exemplar of how linking time connectives are so important. They were all able to rewrite their own version of instructions so this part was successful.
What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners?
For those that got to bake, I think the time in the kitchen working with their peers was invaluable - they had fun trying to measure accurately. It definitely showed who was confident in the kitchen and gave a taster for those who might never have considered baking for enjoyment.
How effective was this kit in promoting healthy food in your classroom?
The kids at our school are already quite healthy conscious as we actively check lunch boxes and talk about sustainability.
What learning from this kit can students take home to impact their family's wellness and health?
Creating meals and baking at home provides more ownership over healthy eating and that they can have some say around what is good to eat and what's not. Some really struggled with the concept of vegetables being in sweet baking.
How high was student engagement throughout this kit?
What percentage of your students were familiar with tinned veges/fruit from use at home?
60%
How keen were your students to try healthy alternatives in baking at the start of this kit?
How inspired were your students to try healthy alternatives to backing after using the kit?
How can the learning in the kit go beyond the classroom to improve whānau wellbeing?
If we had more time, I would have liked them to come up with their own recipes and tried them out at home with a review/reflection sheet - then to 'swap a recipe'.
What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating?
They are not the main household shopper and tend to eat what is provided rather than having their own voice. We see a lot of packaged processed food in some lunchboxes; but in others there is a lot of homemade food.
