A great kit creating collaboration and community involvement. Lots of physical activity and maths made this kit worthwhile. We worked this in with Outdoor Education week and a walk up the Peak helped get our steps up.

We had a great week of walking. We discovered things about our town that we hadn't known previously. It was great to notice fitness levels were improving. Our Community walk day didn't end up going ahead, which was a real shame.

The children really enjoyed measuring the length of our steps and worked out that the kids take 1400 to 1500 steps in a kilometre.

It was a great kit that provided a collaborative element across our kura. It engaged whanau, kept us fit for cross country and camp preparations. The mathematics element was perfectly targeted at our age group.

In what ways did this kit encourage your class to engage in community collaboration? It led to many students asking more questions around our country and history because we attached it to this in class. It would have been really interesting if the students hadn't done something so similar a term earlier. I liked that it meant a good num

The introduction of the idea was initially difficult. Many of the students had actually just come out of a similar mathematical challenge the previous term so it perhaps felt for them like going over recent ground. In order to gather momentum and interest we decided to attach it to elements of Kupe's arrival and journey through New Zealand. This led to way more interest and intrigue as we covered various areas and bits of history. A good connection was made during our walking together and that was how difficult or different things may have been as Kupe walked around New Zealand. These journey's can't have been easy and probably meant many of them suffered great hardships. This helped the students learn a little more about our country but at times there were some differences with how many steps the students got through. Some students were particularly motivated along with their families and this made a huge difference in the amount of steps they got through and how many others did. The extra benefit of attaching it to our own class interests did mean we got a different depth of questioning Another wonderful benefit of the event was when we were able to mix students up in walking buddies. This meant more students learnt more about their classmates and it strengthened the class culture. There were times however where some students could walk our track together in almost total silence. This was always astounding to me! A few of the students loved the tracking and recording of numbers and it was great to celebrate a different skill and interest in the class. It certainly improved the sense of identity and piques students interests in parts of the country. Castlepoint captured many of our students as it is close enough. I did also really enjoy our a group of students got super passionate about making certificates for each other and ours turned into addressing each others strengths. Really culture affirming and confidence building.

In what ways did this kit encourage your class to engage in community collaboration? The kids found it easier to ask family and whanau rather than the whole community, and something for us to build on in the future.

A well thought out kit that really got the kids thinking about being involved, and involving others in a goal. This tied in well to our measurement unit, and really gave them some good understanding of distance - as well as place names around NZ! Took a bit of organising by the kids, but this really helped involve them in the process so the buy in was huge!
