In what ways did this kit encourage your class to engage in community collaboration? We worked on reporting and sharing with the community how we were doing. We kept the challenge within our school due to covid restrictions and easiness

“Our class loved this inquiry. It tied in beautifully with the KiwiKids news theme for term 3. We set up a course around our school, decorated it with facts and kiwiana, played kiwi songs, and invited all our classes to join us. Some did 2 laps (500m per lap) a couple of times throughout the day, others walked more. Classes set their own challenges, and so many students and teachers walked constantly during break times. We kept a tally chart throughout the day and at 2.50pm we had made it! Awesome geography, maths, statistics, measurement, pe and art for our class. Definitely run this one again.”

“It was not as easy to use as the donation of steps, and the class combining their steps was hard to measure as many students had no way to measure this themselves. The concept behind it was good, however.”

In what ways did this kit encourage your class to engage in community collaboration? Conversations about local tracks and working out the maths behind the walk was a really great ( and simple) Way that families can contribute with little or no effort ...just a lovely walk ( lucky we had good weather)

“We found that the students loved the idea of doing it as family and also that animals could be included. It fuelled positive conversations about local walking paths and family time and communication.”

“Great kit, great messages. Wish I’d had it from the start of the term as it would have tied perfectly into our cross country. If doing again, make available for the start of term 3 as this is when most schools do cross country. Going to keep working through it as we didn’t complete it yet.”

“We started the Walk the Length of NZ kit in the last few weeks of Term 3 and will finish in early term 4. It was great to get the kids out of the classroom, measuring their steps and doing practical mathematics in action. My year 7 and 8 class particularly enjoyed walking around our park counting their steps- I think they just enjoyed escaping the class on the lovely spring weather we had last week to have a gossip with their friends! We can't wait to tackle the challenge to walk the length of NZ next term. We are lucky to have a big team and school to help us.”
