In what ways did this kit encourage your class to engage in community collaboration? The day was amazing, and the weather held up for us and it didn’t start raining so we could do our walk. We managed to get 286 people to do the walk, we walked 964 laps of Lake Moananui and we walked 2,410 kilometres, not including to and from the lake. I

On Tuesday 22nd September, Room 19 had to organize a walk for the school at Lake Moananui. We originally were going to do this with just the community, but we ended up doing it for the school and community. We needed at least 278 people to donate their steps to walk the length of New Zealand. From Cape Reinga at the top of the North Island to Bluff at the bottom of the South Island. From both of those points it is 2,102 kilometres and approximately 2,777,985 steps. For us to do that we needed at least 278 people to walk 10,000 steps each. We chose to walk around Lake Moananui because it is 2.5 kilometres around the lake and each person tried to walk 3 laps which is approximately 10,000 steps.

The girls in my class really loved this challenge and enjoyed connecting with their family and friends. Some of the girls also had family from overseas contributing to our total. Another group of girls organised a walk after school.

This was a fun way to get our class active and involve family members in our effort to walk the length of NZ. It was tricky for some to work out steps as they did not all have pedometers, watches or phones, but it meant they had to get creative with counting steps. They loved the shoelaces and certificates.

In what ways did this kit encourage your class to engage in community collaboration? The parents and staff that got involved were very supportive. We need to have another look at getting the children to take ownership of the process.

We are a small, decile 2 school on the West Coast of the South Island with a roll of 60 children. We did our walking From Lunchtime Wednesday 23rd September to lunchtime Thursday. The walking went really well. Even though it rained all day Wednesday! We set up a track down the hallway and round the multipurpose room. The networking was not so successful. We got 30 adults involved through notices and our school facebook page. If I did it again I would start much earlier with publicity. It was kind of left to the last minute because there was so much to get my head around on the teacher sheet.

In what ways did this kit encourage your class to engage in community collaboration? Children will be talking to their neighbours and asking them to donate their steps to us. This could be an igniter for many to get moving and keep moving - more than they would normally do - each day.

When the box arrived, my class knew exactly what it was. They were overjoyed to be doing walk the length of the country. Although they were disappointed to see there weren't any pedometers, they soon realised that it will be much better this time. Much more accurate. We are unable to do the event this term, as our families are busy with lambing and calving. But next term, we will get out step on. We have a goal of getting back up to the top of the South Island. Last year we got to bluff and back to Christchurch.

In what ways did this kit encourage your class to engage in community collaboration? We used the kit to help us identify many different ways of communicating, how to be persuasive, and how to encourage others. Lots of our classes at school helped by getting out and running around the courts. They had to measure first and work out how many

What an amazing experience. 26 children reaching out to their community. Realising that to achieve a huge goal, lots of help can make it happen. It helped us recognise that our community is more than our family, more than close friends, it can be friends of friends, friends overseas, and people who find out and are interested in helping. We made it the whole length and almost back to Wellington! Thanks for a great opportunity.
