This has been an amazing, motivating challenge for us all. Not only did we get to enjoy the outdoors, the physical activity, and the community connection, but also the wealth of mathematics and discussion this kit has generated. We had a awesome Walk NZ walking event organised when the weather cleared up (see photos), which helped to bump up our step count. In the end, our students have been so motivated to continue our journey to Bluff, and we aim to continue to work towards this goal in our own time. AWESOMENESS all around!!!

In what ways did this kit encourage your class to engage in community collaboration? The children enjoyed getting their family on board with this task, and they benefitted from seeing the different types of exercises that other people did to get their steps in.
We want to collate the huge number of steps from accross NZ, please share your final number with us. Our total steps were 2783535 - this gave us an excess of just over 5000. The children were really interested in the fact that this was only enough steps to get us to the closest mall and back, so it was a close call!

The children were keen to get their families on board with this, and used Google docs to create a poster to share with the community. We also used Google forms and a tiny URL to get people to add their steps. This had a good ICT component, as we were also able to create spreadsheet and use the formula function to calculate the steps. We didn't manage to get 278 people contributing - we got around 145 people, and most did more than 10000 to get us to our total. The stickers and the posters were really helpful to show their progress visually!
