What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? There was alot of actions that were required of the tamariki, especially the recording of the information, the testing taken at meter intervals, the understanding that data can change even in that short distance.

In what ways did this kit develop understanding of the cultural significance of water in Te Ao Māori? Especially the lack of any life form in the stream that we were testing, we didn't really find anything alive.

“I found that trying to do water testing in the middle of winter was a tad difficult with the mud and the cold and the fact that rivers were prone to be a bit flooded. The saftey issues were more pronounced during this time. The kit itself was awesome, except we kept loosing our magnifying glasses, and because of the time of the year, it was a bit too cold to be in the water for too long looking for it. In what ways did this kit develop understanding of the cultural significance of water in Te Ao Māori? We were unable to use the kit for various reasons, but we had many class discussions about the importance of water health and our obligations to protect the land through Te Tiriti ō Waitangi.

“We were unable to use the kit as there was no time in the programme and it turned out that the nearest place we could do water testing was not accessible to all of my students. The kit did seem extremely thorough and I was impressed with the quality of what was within.”

In what ways did this kit develop understanding of the cultural significance of water in Te Ao Māori? Our tamariki have a very strong cultural understanding of the significance of wai and this kit helped to deepen a western scientific perspective of water.

It was really cool to talk about our local area in regards to water, it developed our local curriculum knowledge. We were able to talk about the cultural significance of local waterways and how and how they connected with their environment.

“Our class really enjoyed this, we were late in getting started with other topics going on it our team. The unit came alive when we got to do a bug study with a lady from ECAN, this expert knowledge provided a great base to continue the unit. It had a wide variety of experience that connected with different learners, passions and interests.”

“This was a great idea for a kit but the reality of taking a whole class out to test the water in a moving body of water was somewhat more challenging. We ended up with large numbers of students waiting around, trying not to disturb the water while each small group carried out their tasks.”
