In what ways did this kit develop understanding of the cultural significance of water in Te Ao Māori? the effects of pollution eg looking at what rubbish was in our awa and how it got into our awa in the first place.

“The resources and the kit itself was very interesting. My students were intrigued by the different parts inside the kit and they could be used for. Using 'I wonder' questions and researching information this was genuinely a good inquiry discussion which lead us into our environment and what we could do to help protect and inform others about our local awa in our area.”

This kit enabled our class to visit local waterways that hold a great deal of significance to both our school and local iwi. Many incidental discussions were held around local stories and history which meant for true, authentic learning experiences.

“This project was done as an extension project for a group of environmentally aware group. They have been doing this in their spare time and will be presenting their findings to the Syndicate and BOT. The stream runs through the school and is currently fenced off until we can make it safe. They plan to do further restoration to it to make it more accessible.”

“This was a great idea for a kit but the reality of taking a whole class out to test the water in a moving body of water was somewhat more challenging. We ended up with large numbers of students waiting around, trying not to disturb the water while each small group carried out their tasks.”
