In what ways did this kit develop understanding of the cultural significance of water in Te Ao Māori? Students have begun to understand that water is important to people in different ways and for different uses. We are all responsible for the care of our environment.
Students were engaged with this topic - especially since it was about their local backyard. They have begun to understand the importance of regular data gathering in determining how healthy the stream is. It is something that we can continue doing on a yearly basis and take action accordingly to improve the stream health.

Very useful kit. I struggled with how to use a few things but my students figured them out and got it all sorted. They enjoyed the discovery and testing, it was very engaging

What opportunities have arisen for future learning from this kit? An EOTC experience and a group of students actually then went and created a water filtration system that they could use at their own family farm.

In what ways did this kit develop understanding of the cultural significance of water in Te Ao Māori? We enjoyed learning through a cultural lens, so much so that we planned and prepared to visit a Tainui owned farm. Where we would hear from local manawhenua as well as a local farmer.
I had originally planned an EOTC experience to a local farm to test the water, however it was sadly cancelled due to covid restrictions. However, our theme has been focusing on the sustainable development goals, of which a group of students decided to focus there outcome around water sanitation. They loved being able to use this kit and take it home to test the water on one of their family farms! Thank you again for the awesome learning opportunity!

We already do regular cleanups of the surrounding reserve and shoreline - but we could share our test results with our sc

In what ways did this kit develop understanding of the cultural significance of water in Te Ao Māori? This kit built on our long term involvement in riparian planting, and how clean waterways increase food sources like eel and whitebait, but also that the awa is a cleansing place so therefore it should be clean.
This kit tied in well with the work our class has been doing at our local river and the water quality work we were doing with Waikato Zero Waste. Due to having to close our school during term three, we have yet to complete our water quality testing at the river, but this is scheduled at the start of Term 4. However due to Term 3 being such a crazy busy term we have still not made it to the river yet.

In what ways did this kit develop understanding of the cultural significance of water in Te Ao Māori? That water is essential for life, has a mauri or life force and that living and non-living things are interconnected. The students learnt that we are kaitiaki of our waterways and that we have a responsibility for protecting waterways.
The kit was user friendly and very useful for helping the students understand the importance of monitoring and safeguarding the health of our waterways.

Being from Hawke's Bay and experiencing such a bad drought this year, the students are really interested in how we can support the preservation of water in our local community. We are currently investigating how Climate Change is affecting our environment

In what ways did this kit develop understanding of the cultural significance of water in Te Ao Māori? How important water is to the livelihood of the families in our community.
What an amazing unit this was. Could have carried on with it for much longer. So much discussion, thinking, reasoning involved. The three classes in our small rural school used this kit as their focus for Inquiry during Term 3. Activities were modified for our Junior classes. We had a fabulous adventure to a stream on one of our farms in the local area. Unfortunately it began to rain near lunch time so we had to cut our day short. Due to travel costs we were unable to go back and ensure everyone finished all investigations. We were so glad we had mocked up a stream (with a large strip of paper) and planned how we were going to set our site up and what we needed to do with each investigation. Made for a trip where the kids were clear on what needed to be done and were able to collaborate and manage their group in their own time.

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? We did some research into waterways and sustainable uses with water thanks to the school juniors articles &; connected books. The kids also looked into water catchment and design and what innovation could come about to support our marine life.

In what ways did this kit develop understanding of the cultural significance of water in Te Ao Māori? Did add some adaption to it but was a great starting point to start conversations.
This was awesome!! Students loved being engaged with the science concept of the learning. As we had just finished learning statistic prior to starting the school kit kids were able to apply their new knowledge with their data. We’ve also had students asking to keep up with the monitoring for the rest of the year!
