In what ways did this kit develop understanding of the cultural significance of water in Te Ao Māori? We have talked about the importance of water and how different culture are linked to water in different ways - life source. It was also great to bring in the Christian aspect of baptism and how water is used for cleansing.

“The water testing kit was amazing. The children were keen to get going. Our plan was to test the water quality of Pandora Pond after the Napier floods. We were all set to go when suddenly the wind got up, Optimist Yachting got cancelled and we never made it to the Pond. The another water testing trip that was cancelled. The quality of the equipment was second to none and we are going to have a go at using it when our own manmade pond. Thanks for the great stuff School Kit.”

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? After using our Water Testing Kit over a two day period our students wrote explanations around the threats to our local awa and why our awa is important. We also did art around different creatures found in our awa.

What opportunities have arisen for future learning from this kit? We later identified that the kit could be used again when we did a whole school sustainability day earlier in Term 4. This meant that all levels (NE-Yr8) re-used the water testing kits in the stream that runs through our school.

It helped our students understand the importance of our Awa in the past, and allowed them to explore some of our local history. They also have a good understanding of the importance of it for our future,.

We recently visited the trout hatchery in Turangi and it was great that our students had learnt and had an understanding about the health of a river and could draw on this knowledge during our visit. “What a highly interactive learning kit the 'Water Kit' has been. The tasks have been clearly linked to science and environmental issues. The tasks are very hands-on and have encouraged our children to respect and make use of the local river and lakes.
