What influence has this kit had in promoting the longevity of water saving habits and what other water related topics did your students come up with? We were also looking at our local rivers, so the awareness of the importance of keeping our rivers safe also came into our learning

They became really aware how much water we were wasting when washing our paint brushes! We came up with new solutions. They also tell people off for wasting water at the fountain!

The daily stamping activity reinforced this commitment, making the process both fun and goal-oriented. Beyond the structured content, the kit sparked student-led discussions on various water-related topics. These included exploring the concept of virtual water in consumer goods, investigating the causes and impacts of global water scarcity, and brainstorming innovations for sustainable water management. The students' curiosity extended to understanding the water cycle in greater depth and considering how different industries affect water resources. They found it interesting how having water instead of fizzy could help to reduce water waste. This lead into a discussion about healthy choices also. They were also facinated by how much water they can save by just turning off the tap while brushing their teeth.

They realise that little choices they make can add up and make a big difference. This started a dicussion about kaitiakitanga and how we can all make better choices for our environment.

This was really helpful for statistics and recording our data on the charts. Students were most surprised at tap water usage (filling a cup of water vs jug and washing hands/brushing teeth). We tested the suggested usage amounts out and they were actually quite accurate.

“I was really impressed with the WaterSavers24 tool. I wanted to teach statistics in a relevant context, and this tool was a suitable learning resource for our summer months, where many students are on tank water. The resource also enabled students to take some ownership of home learning (recording their water use at home) and explored the wider issue of water consumption. Overall Year 7&8 students engaged in the process and enjoyed it.”

“The Water Savers 24 was filled with awesome activities and the tamariki loved realising that they had made a real difference towards reducing their water wastage and recycling their used water for many different purposes. Having the "containers" on the wall was a great visual and brought home to them just how much water as a group and as a family they were using. Great feedback from the whānau as well. The water cycle in a bag was such a simple but effective way to model the water cycle and one that I will always use going forward. Lots of work was needed to ensure that the measurements were accurate so the combination of science and maths in the form of measurement and statistics to provide the evidence was a powerful one.”
