The water savers kit was a great kit to use to teach children about the importance of conserving water. The children gained a greater understanding of how water is a scarce resource and as country children probably gained a better understanding of insight as to why their parents are conscious of water usage if they are on tank water. My class found it interesting how much water is used to make some of the things that they use daily.

What was the impact of the daily stamping practice in your classroom and which water benchmark did your students find most fascinating? Tap off while brushing teeth - some students already use a cup rather than running water. A good discussion around whether you use more water to wash dished by hand or in a dishwasher - esp if you rinse.
How have your students' perceptions of water conservation changed since using the resource and did it foster a sense of responsibility and awareness in your classroom? Yes. They were unaware that water needed to be conserved at all - they felt it was infinate, especially after learning the water cycle which had given them the impression that water just goes around and around and there is always enough.

I ran this kit while we were studying sustainability with a Year 7 and 8 class. This was a good way to start each lesson talking about what they had recorded each day. It also tied in well to the content so we could discuss it and bring it in throughout the lessons. It would have been good to have two classes running at the same time to allow a competition across classes. Definitely would use again!

Which water saving habit/s were your students most engaged in? Using the chore chooser
What influence has this kit had in promoting the longevity of water saving habits and what other water related topics did your students come up with? I think this depends on the student, as some started habits they still continue and others were less likely to. We looked at how people around the world collect water, the state of the rivers near us, how climate change is affecting the oceans.

What was the impact of the daily stamping practice in your classroom and which water benchmark did your students find most fascinating? For some students they worked really hard to try earn lots of stamps. Others did not engage very well, possibly due to lack of clarity around what they were being asked to do. The one they enjoyed the most was 5 minute showers.
How have your students' perceptions of water conservation changed since using the resource and did it foster a sense of responsibility and awareness in your classroom? Yes, lots of them talked about what they do at home or what they started doing at home in order to save water. It linked really well to learning about the amount and quality of fresh water around the globe, and to learning about climate change.

The water savers kit was an interesting one with lots of learning. I found it quite hard to run well unfortunately as I was in and out of class, and it is one that needs consistency, particularly for the data collection. The kids loved the stickers and badges, and they enjoyed stamping but I did not have full buy-in. Again, this was potentially due to consistency. It linked really well to our theme of Kaitiakitanga (context of water) and led to other opportunities for exploration.

What influence has this kit had in promoting the longevity of water saving habits and what other water related topics did your students come up with? It worked well to show students how they can save water in their every day lives. The 10 days I don't believe was long enough to form strong habits but it was enough time to make them think about how they are using their water.

I teach a year 5/6 class, and throughout term 3 2024 we were looking at ways to look after and take care of our environment. The Water Savers kit provided us with a great way to conclude this unit as we took action to help by saving water in practical, easy, and measurable ways.

Really makes you think about how much water is wasted. Simple things that could save a huge amount of water if everyone turned off when not actually using the water.
