Based on your description, it seems likely that the **medium size (M)** might suit you better than the small size (S). The medium provides more room around the ankle, which should make it easier to manipulate and pull on the stocking, especially if swelling is present.

I see you have ordered size Small. This size is only suitable for calves between 11.8 and 14.8" and a maximum foot width of 4.1". When your calf is bigger of your foot is wider, you need to have a larger size. Maybe this is causing issues?

First of all my apologies for this belated reply. Unfortunately I missed your message on our review platform and I haven't heard of you via email/ our contact form..
I'm so sorry about your husbands situation. I see you have ordered size Small. This size is only suitable for calves between 11.8" and 14.8" and a maximum foot width of 4.8". When I read your message, I'm really sure that size M would have worked, as it's bigger so there's a lot more space for the foot..
