After exhaustive research on "smart" timers to replace a 24-year-old Hardie 9-zone system I decided on the Hunter Hydrawise HC 1200i after doing a "virtual" test-drive of the control application which runs on web browser — https://app.hydrawise.com — iOS and Android. The free Hydrawise app allowed me to create, configure and simulate running my current layout with weather-linked "smart" Hydrawise watering before actually buying the controller in about 30 minutes. The "try it" mode is brilliant marketing on the part of Hunter and I was quickly convinced to buy one. Installation When the unit arrived wired it to the large plug-in transformer, entered my WiFi name/password and when prompted entered the unit serial number into the app. before mounting it on the wall. The "virtual" system I had created on the Hunter cloud server downloaded and synced controller and stored in flash memory (no back-up battery required). Because I had already programmed the zones during the "test-drive" it was mounted in the garage and watering the yard less than hour after receiving it. The future watering schedule calendar showed watering would be skipping after the days when rain is forecast. Schedules and Usage Reports One of the best features of Hydrawise are its reporting features. Because it is a system developed for use by irrigation contractors it has robust and well-thought-out scheduling and actual run calendars, a report showing when the rain sensor was triggered and inhibited watering — useful for calibrating it — and a troubleshooting report showing when each zone solenoid was triggered and the amperage load. If the irrigation system has a flow meter the app will report water usage by zone and alert for leaking solenoids. Outstanding Customer Support Hunter customer support starts when the free app is downloaded. There is an extensive help function built into the app and if the answer isn't found there a query gets a very quick reply from a Hunter tech. rep. I asked several questions via the help function in the app before and after installing the unit and got same-day replies. I followed-up several times with the same tech rep. additional questions. Hunter also has many very informative YouTube tutorials on its channel.
