I broke down on a motorway around 4:30pm and called RAC as I have full UK rescue and recovery. Long story short, (and after having to repeatedly call back as I had no updates) 8 hours later I was told that no one could come and recover me or the vehicle until the next morning. Over this time period, I was assured numerous time someone would be with me in an hour which never happened. I was also assured my case was on urgent as I was left a single young female, 2 hours from home in the middle of no where, and my phone was dying. 8 hours after breaking down and only then was I told that no one would be able to come untill morning. Which left me stranded with the only option to either spend 2 hours in a taxi with a stranger and no phone to contact anyone or having to sleep in the car. I was also asked to leave the keys of the car with a complete stranger at a petrol station which I was incredibly uncomfortable with. Eventually I had to get a family member to drive a 4 hour round trip to collect me at 2am. I had to leave the car abandoned. I was told on one of the calls that the car would have to stay there as 'the contractor said they where doing a favour but wont take the car and its not their job' Which I found absolutely disgusting, At one point, after waiting 6 hours, I was told someone was on their way - it then transpired that the operative on the phone didnt even have to notes to say where I was - absolutely unbelievable. I was given constant mis-information when I called and did not receive update when promised. I was absolutely terrified having been left for 13 hours in the dark and cold, so far from home with no contact. I was then assured that the car would be recovered first thing on the morning of 3rd July, Again, I had absolutely no updates. I called again at 9am and was told that still no one had been dispatched - and that someone would call me back with an update. An hour later, I had still heard nothing and had to call back again, Finally for the car to be back almost 24 hours after breaking down. I am absolutely shocked and disgusted at the service I received, it was an incredibly traumatic experience. Complete waste of time and money - The whole point in having this cover is for reassurance that if something goes wrong, you have peace of mind that there will be assistance to get you safely to your destination. This experience has been the complete opposite, the way this was handled put me in more danger than If I didnt have breakdown cover. I raised a complaint and asked for the calls to be listened to as it was completely unacceptable - this was not done. There was zero empathy or understanding when discussing the complaint and very little in the way of apology. I was told I could not escalate my complaint, and that they are not regulated by anyone. I also asked to be reimbursed for the petrol I had to pay a poor family member who had to come and get me and I was told absolutely not and It wont be looked at further. I would avoid at all costs, breaking down is stressful enough and the RAC made it 10 times worse
