Last Friday I broke down at 11:07am. I called the RAC and reported the break down. 12:04pm I was called back and advised the vehicle would need a full recovery and a patrol was no good. That was perfect planning and spot on. I was asked where did I want to be recovered to. I specified a postcode. I was told that I only had a 10mile tow. (This is in dispute and the level of cover is not what I was after.) I was told for an additional 4.75 miles I would need to pay a top up of £100. When I questioned the lady on the phone about this I was told the following. Even if the level of cover is not correct its tough luck today as no matter what I did about my membership, I'd still have to pay the £100. The lady then cut the call. Given that it could have been a poor phone signal I called back. The lady I then spoke to was very helpful and kind. She informed me that there was no job and the recovery had been cancelled. After a few mins and further questions and details I was told that the recovery had been reinstated but that a patrol would be sent to assess my vehicle. By 1pm I'd heard nothing so I called back for an update only to be told that the recovery had been cancelled at 12:04pm because I'd apparently refused to pay £100. (Which wasn't true) eventually by 1.58pm after parting with £100 I was told that help was on the way and the recovery would be with me by 4:45pm. (Please note I reported the break down at 11:07am. I recieved a phone call from westbourne recovery asking where I was located. I asked when they would arrive. I was told they couldn't give me a time as they were very busy. This was frustrating. I called back the RAC and while on the phone the lady said the recovery had been put back untill 7pm. The special intervention team got involved. They authorised a cab for my wife which cost £42. They also authorised up to £150 for me to find my own recovery. While this was arranged the recovery time was delayed untill 9pm. (Please not again recovery reported at 11:07am.) I've eventually got back to where I needed to go £292 out of pocket. £100 taken under similar circumstances to extortion to the RAC. £42 to a cab company to get my poor wife home. £150 for my own recovery. I've now been told it's up to 21 days to even get a response from the RAC. I've emailed and asked for updates. Nothing. Eventually after various public Facebook posts they responded. They seem to think the service was acceptable and they were doing me a favour giving me my money back. Avoid at all costs.
