On Friday 27 September my two daughters and I, plus dog, set off from Glasgow for a stay in a cabin near Loch Awe in the Scottish Highlands. We were in my younger daughter's car and she was driving. On the A82 near Crianlarich the car began juddering alarmingly so we pulled in off the road, into a quiet dead-end lane that led to a B&B. My daughter parked and called the RAC. This was at 3.40pm. They said they would be with us by 5.30pm, which was then extended to 7pm. We waited and waited. Despite numerous calls to them and promises that they would return our calls, they did not do so. After several hours of waiting, no updates and no idea how roadworthy the car was for an onward journey, we decided our safest bet was to return to Glasgow and leave the car for an "unaccompanied recovery". We notified the RAC and paid £120 for a taxi to take us back to Glasgow. We received a text from some random recovery company at 12.30am on Saturday morning, when of course we were all asleep. After that nothing. Again repeated calls to the RAC proved fruitless – we still had no idea when the car would be returned to my daughter's home address. In the end, they took more than three days to return it, on Monday 30 September. Worse still, they returned the car with damage to the roof that had not been there before – a dent above the lefthand passenger side, scratches all over the roof, and the radio aerial ripped out of its rooftop socket. We took all this up with the RAC, but their recovery people insist that the damage was there when they arrived to recover the car. The roof was undamaged when we left the car and it would have been impossible for such damage to have been done at the location where we left it: a very quiet rural lane with no through access other than to a B&B at the end. The car was also parked very close to a high bank on the left-hand side, so no other vehicle could have got past it on that side to dent the roof. Ripping an aerial from its socket would also take considerable force, from above. The damage can only have been done by clumsy, rough handling by the recovery people but they are denying all responsibility. I have been truly shocked by this experience and the dismissive attitude of the RAC. Avoid them at all costs! Appalling company.
