Reported breakdown to RAC, process was efficent and easy turbo had blown so they sent a "recovery partner" - not RAC but a local company who must do sub-contract work and that's when things started to go wrong. We had to change the recovery garage to one that was 12 miles away (2 miles outside the allowed radius). While en-route the recovery driver phoned to report the distance, his controller stated that we had to phone RAC to pay for the extra mileage at around £6 per mile - which is fair enough.
Phoned the RAC, explained the issue and was put on hold while the gentleman on the other end of the phone 'calculated' the cost - surely 2 x £6 = £12.... Not where the RAC are concerned - total cost £98!!!??? £13 for mileage PLUS AN £85 EXCESS FOR GOING OVER 10 MILES!!! If we didn't pay the fee the recovery drivery said we'd be unloaded and left.
Absolutely disgusted, the RAC operator spoke like a robot, no empathy at all, just refused to engage. Recovery driver chuckling "Yeah" when we asked if we would just be left at the side of the road if we didn't pay. Well done RAC, that's some level of customer care....
