In late November 2018 bought an iPhone7 from Best Buy Vernon Hills IL specifically requesting it be unlocked and SIM free for use outside the United States. The phone was a Christmas gift for my daughter. The sales assistant and a colleague from the phone dept understood my request and provided me with something BestBuy called a Universal iPhone. When I inserted a SIM on Christmas morning I found the phone is locked to US networks. I phoned BestBuy today who said they were sorry I had been sold a phone not fit for purpose but as the return policy is 14 days there was nothing they can do - all this despite charging me $483 for what is now a useless non functioning phone. A subsequent google search turns this up as a common issue so perhaps the Geek Squad are more Goons that Geeks and chasing an easy sale rather than truly informing customers. As for customer service and trying to right a wrong all I can say is "caveat emptor" (Buyer beware) when dealing with BestBuy. Just in case anyone else is considering buying such a phone the BestBuy Universal iPhone costs the same as an unlocked iPhone from Apple Store. However unlike the Apple Store phone which will work on any network globally the BestBuy Universal phone locks to the US network it is activated on despite you paying full price for the phone. So do your research.
