Subject: Serious Concerns Regarding Tire Installation and Safety at Canadian Tire For the past few years, I have been a regular customer of Canadian Tire on the North Shore in Kamloops, where I had my seasonal tire changes performed. Each time, the tires were placed in plastic for me to bring back the following season. However, approximately five days ago, I visited Mr. Lube in North Shore, Kamloops, for an oil change. During this service, the attendant brought to my attention that the winter tires currently on my vehicle were unsafe and should never have been installed. This revelation was deeply concerning, as Canadian Tire had installed these tires just three weeks prior. I had been using the same tires, stored and wrapped in plastic as per their routine, for several seasons, and I relied on Canadian Tire's expertise for both installation and safety checks. The attendant at Mr. Lube identified several critical issues with the tires: one tire was not the correct size for my vehicle, all four tires showed significant cracking, and one tire had multiple missing studs. Given the seriousness of the situation, I immediately contacted my son, who is a car salesman, to validate the information. On his recommendation, I asked the Mr. Lube attendant to take photographs of the tires, which he did using my phone. After reviewing the images, my son confirmed that the tires were indeed unsafe to drive on. The Mr. Lube attendant further explained that had I brought the tires to them for installation, they would have refused to mount them due to their hazardous condition. I was shocked that Canadian Tire had installed these unsafe tires without informing me of the potential risks. I had been driving with them for a month, including two out-of-town trips, unknowingly endangering myself and my family. After my oil change, I returned to the Canadian Tire location to address the issue with the store manager. Unfortunately, the manager’s response was dismissive and he did not acknowledge any fault. After I expressed my concerns, they reluctantly offered to replace two tires at a cost of $1,000. Feeling unsupported, I declined their offer and returned to Mr. Lube, where I was able to purchase four new, high-quality winter tires for $798, including tax. The staff at Mr. Lube treated me with respect and professionalism, ensuring that my safety was their priority. Following this experience, I have decided not to return to Canadian Tire for any future services. I later spoke with a head manager at Canadian Tire, who expressed shock upon hearing what had happened. While I was offered $100 in Canadian Tire money, I feel that this gesture is insufficient considering the serious safety risk I was exposed to. I plan to use this credit at Mark's, but I remain deeply concerned by how the situation was handled. What upsets me most is the lack of concern from the mechanical manager at Canadian Tire. While the head office manager assured me that an email would be sent to the mechanics, instructing them to ensure they are installing safe tires, I am left wondering whether this will truly result in meaningful change. I asked one of the employees if he would want his mother driving on the tires they had installed on my car. As a mother and grandmother, I cannot imagine the grief my family would have endured had I been in an accident due to the unsafe tires. The employee offered no response, simply looking away. I hope that anyone considering having their tires changed at Canadian Tire will read this and think carefully about their safety before doing so. Sincerely, Dana Marcano
