I bid on a 2005 PT Cruiser convertible where the damage listed was"side damage" and "rear end damage" and scratches, but "runs and drives". Before I got too carried away by auction fever, I visited the location and inspected the car. Staff was very cordial, and loaned me a car starter pack to start the car. Engine ran good and so all looked ok. Then I noticed that there were strut springs on the passenger floor and I wondered where these came from. The rear end of the car was down on the axle, and it was obvious that someone had taken the struts off and stole the cartridges and left the springs on the floor. I compared the "sag" at the rear of the car to the listing pictures and it is obvious that the listing pics show the rear of the car on its suspension as per normal and the actual condtion showed a suspension tampering that left the car undriveable.
I alerted the store manager that I wanted my bid cancelled based on the stolen parts. This theft could only have been done by those with access to the car after the listing; namely employees.
My bid was cancelled, and the car re-listed with new pics but the same description of damage as before- no mention of suspension damage. This is for the next guy to figure out I guess. Is this ethical behavior? Do we expect this kind of "catch us if you can" treatment at Lowes or Home Depot? I have bought cars from Copart in the past with good results. This experience made me read other reviews, and I think its best for me to stay away in the future from this operation, based on this non disclosure of problems with this car. Would you like to be the buyer of this surprise??
