Bought a car from the Cardiff branch in Sloper road. My stepdaughters car was valued at £3k but I knew they would offer less. After going through multiple questions about the car and the sales person and a manager viewing the car ( which was 11 years old with full service history and 66k on the clock and having passed it's MOT the day before,) we were offered £1500. I said I wasn't happy with that, so they increased it to £1700. They asked a multitude of questions, repeatedly asking if the brakes had been done recently and how much service history it had ( 8 stamps, 6 of which were main dealer.) then told us that they'd give the £1700 subject to a ramp test the next day. Considering the amount being offered and status of the trade in, the amount of inspection compared to ANY other dealer I've dealt with in over 30 years of purchasing cars was mind blowing! Fast forward to the next day. We take the car in for it's " ramp test" and Evans Halshaw mechanics state that " the clutch is worn and we'll have to put a new one in, that will cost £900, so the new part ex valuation is £1000. "
1. The car was driving without issue
2. I got a quote of £240 plus VAT when I enquired elsewhere ( not that it needed a clutch but I wanted to know how much it would be)
3. I refused the offer, went outside turned the car on, put it in first gear with handbrake on, lifted the clutch and the car stalled no issue.
My stepdaughter still wanted the car she'd seen, so we went to the nearest we buy any car dealership and sold her car for £1700 in ten minutes, after they'd looked it over and test driven it.
Went back to Evans Halshaw ( I didn't want to buy my stepdaughter really wanted the car she'd seen,) there were two cheaper on the net but further away. Spent over 2hrs going through paperwork, got the new car and left, having had to arrange insurance ( normal) and prove to them electronically we had it insured ( not normal)
Next day, we had 4 phone calls asking to sign the electronic invoice ( we'd signed the paper one in there) but apparently the warrantee was null and void without the electronic copy. It had taken literally hours to go through the whole process, and the car we bought had no service history for the last 4 years ( 6 year old car) ( that one was down to me not checking but being emotionally swamped from the amount of questioning, level of paperwork and incessant bureaocracy)
To summarise: massively over elaborate part ex system . Fictitious issues found with no proof, leading to hugely over inflated quotes for fictitious repairs and a massive reduction in part ex value ( 2 day process) then hounded to sign electronic copies when we'd already been in there hours.
This will most definitely be the only time I deal with Evans Halshaw. AVOID.
