I hired a car from the Edinburgh city location in early November 2020 to return Jan 1st 2021. Because of the uncertain nature of travel due to the pandemic, I asked at the time of booking if it would be possible to extend the rental should circumstances change. I was assured this would be fine.
When new travel restrictions were introduced, I phoned the office to extend the rental. I was told the company does not extend rentals beyond 56 days and the car "has to be sent back" to the company from which Greenmotion had hired it.
I was not told in person about the 56-day rental cap, and it is not specified in the contract. In addition, returning the vehicle means crossing local authority boundaries into an area that has significantly higher cases of covid, then returning to an area where the infection is low. The Scottish Government has forbidden travel across local authority boundaries for anything but essential travel.
Upon contacting Customer Services, I was told they could arrange someone to come to where I am staying and swap the vehicles – but at my expense. When I raised the assurance given to me at point-of-rental concerning extending the rental, they said they couldn’t comment open something that “may or may not have been said”.
Given these experiences, I would not recommend Greenmotion to people wanting long term or flexible rentals, or wanting to take cars beyond the metropolitan zone in which the hiring office is located. Let the buyer beware – because for Greenmotion the buyer is not always right.
