So I ordered my uber at 4:30 PM because I had a dentist appointment at 4:40. I figured that since my dentist is only an 8 to 10 minute drive from my place that I can order a ride only 10 minutes prior to when I was due to get to the appointment. Plus my sister and I were in communication, and I told her that I wouldn't order my ride until 4:30. The thing is I've been constantly taking ubers regularly for the past 9 years and very seldom did I ever have a serious problem with them prior to this incident. I figured too since the 4PM hour is usually primetime for uber drivers to be out and about that I could get an uber ride that was only 2 or 3 minutes away and make my dentist appoinment ontime. So now we get to when I ordered my uber at 4:30, I see that my driver is 3 minutes away, and I figured "okay, he'll be here soon." Then the ticker on my phone goes down to 2 minutes away, and it was shortly after that happened when my app shows that my driver is just sitting at an intersection 0.5 miles from my place not moving. And he continues to be in that position for 2 minutes. At this point I was beginng to get a bit impatient and agitated, but this is far from the worst part of my whole ordeal. Anyways, after 2 to 3 minutes my driver finally starts moving again, so I figure "oh finally he'll be here in no time." But then this whole thing takes an unexpected turn, all of the sudden my app shows that my driver is now heading toward my dentist's office and not my place, even though he hadn't even picked me up yet. At this point I was getting frantic so I called the uber driver and tried to calmly tell him where I was at as well as see where he was, but he was of little help. All he told me was that he was on his way, but the thing is people have to learn to be more specific. If you're just telling me you're on your way that's of little to no help. On your way could mean just a minute away or it could mean 10 minutes away. And one thing this guy didn't understand was that it looked like there may have been a glitch in my app, so I was calling to confirm what the system was telling him on his end. Anyways, after he told me he was on his way I asked him to clarify, and he said that the thing was showing "3 minutes away". I waited another 4 minutes and he still didn't show up. It was then that I called him again at which point he said that he's a minute away, and I then told him my address at which point he gave me a smart ass reply and said "I'm just following the gps." I said that I knew that, I just wanted to make sure that the thing was telling him to pick me up at the right location that I had requested. He then said that he would pull over and then I don't hear from him again since I think he hung up on me. Shortly after that interaction happened I noticed that my app showed that my ride had arrived at my dentist's office even though I was never actually picked up from my home location that I requested to be picked up from to go to my dentist. I then had to phone my mom (who lives all the way on the other end of town) to come pick me up to which she agrees. And at this point it's already 4:42, so it's already past the point where I was due to get to my dentist's. So I call my densit's office, I tell the woman at the front desk my situation and that I would be late getting there. I tell her that I wouldn't be getting there until 5 at the earliest, but she tells me that I would need to reschedule my dentist appointment because someone was booked right after me. Now look, I understand that dentists get booked up quickly, but what I don't understand and have zero empathy for is uber drivers who think they're entitled. This driver clearly did not want to listen to my side of the story. There was clearly a glitch in the app, but uber seemed to be refusing to take responsibility for the issue. I now lost more than $8. In other words I was charged for a ride that I didn't even take all because uber made a mistake. And I do also want to bring up that out of anger I gave my driver a one star review, and I tapped in the reasons why in the app. I put down that he was not polite, not courteous, and ignored my requests. I also want to put all of this down, because I need people to hear not just my side of the story, but also the facts. And the facts are that I requested a ride to pick me up at my place, the app said my ride was on its way, and then it switched gears and told me it was on its way to my dentist's office even though the driver never actually picked me up from my place. And furthermore, my advice to all uber drivers out there is that if you're going to be working as an independant contractor then please, learn to be courteous to your customers. If a customer contacts you trying to get help please hear them out and don't ignore them and hang up on them. That's unprofessional behavior. Sure the customer isn't always right, but the thing is unless a customer is asking for a completely ridiculous request that is either illegal or against company protocol then a customer has every right to voice their concern. And the last thing I'll say is that I plan on getting my own car later this year and if/when that comes to fruition I plan on never using uber again!!!!!!!!!
