The shirt is incredibly expensive for what it is. I NEVER pay this kind of money for a dress shirt, let alone a t shirt. So I’m cheap about clothes, admittedly. I think I’d feel less...exploited if the economics made conventional sense. The website talks about the special steps it takes to ensure a safe and healthful working environment for its factory workers in China. Given the expense of the shirt it would seem feasible to make them in the US, even with domestic fabric (I know bamboo grows here, quite readily, so why not?). I struggle conceptually, ethically, with paying “made in USA” prices for an item intentionally made far away and shipped here, apparently in a effort to improve working conditions in that far away place. While a laudable goal (improving working conditions, that is), I would rather see this effort expended on establishing good pay and working conditions in, say, Baltimore or Biloxi or some tiny hamlet in rural Pennsylvania. I guess I’d feel differently if the shirt were priced at $20 (maybe), but I don’t see myself ordering another one.
